General Information About Haiti
Haiti is a relatively new country which gained independence through a successful revolution less than 70 years ago (under French control before that). It is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, with 80% of the population living under poverty and 54% in abject poverty (CIA, 2010). This is partially due to the recent major (7.0 magnitude) earthquake that rocked Haiti on January 12, 2010, affecting an estimated 3 million people and killing approximately 230 000 people, as well as leaving 1 milllion people homeless (Wikipedia, 2010).The terrible economy results in illegal migration, civil disputes, and illegal selling and handling of drugs, which are the major issues in Haiti. (CIA, 2010)
Haitians also experience a wide variety of health issues such as a large amount of people living with HIV/AIDS. An estimated 120,000 people are living with HIV/AIDS and 7100 people die from HIV/AIDS. Haiti spends 6% of its GDP on health, ranking 105th on an international scale (CIA, 2009). There are 0.25 physicians for every 1000 people in Haiti (CIA, 1998) and 1.3 hospital beds for every 1000 people (CIA, 2007).
The official languages of Haiti are French (spoken by 10% of the people) and Creole (spoken by all Haitians). (Fact Index, 2010) The state religion is Roman Catholicism (practiced by 80% of the population), but more than half of the population also practices voodoo traditions (Fact Index, 2010). 95% of the population are of African Descent (black-skinned) and the remaining 5% are of mixed Caucasian-African Descent (white and yellow-skined and mulatto). (Fact Index, 2010)
Haitians' exports are mainly agricultural goods and services: 66% of the population work in agriculture, 9% in industry and 25% in services, yet 28% of the profit comes from agriculture, 20% from industry and 52% from services. (CIA, 2010)
